Mathematician Arlie Petters’ work with gravitational lensing could change the face of astrophysics, potentially enabling cosmologists to understand aspects of the universe that remain a mystery. Petters is the first to admit that he would not be where he is today without having had the help and influence of key mentors along the way. Petters now acts as a mentor himself, through the institute for math and science that he established in his hometown of Dangriga, Belize. To what degree do you think aspiring scientists or other young people should have a mentor? What do you see as the advantages that people who don't have mentors would miss? Or do you think it's better for people to go their own way, learn for themselves without a mentor?
Note: If mentoring has affected your life, we’d love to hear about it. Please send us your story through this form on our NOVA scienceNOW Web site.
